The Olde English Babydoll is one of the oldest of the English breeds of sheep is the Southdown, originating on the South Down hills of Sussex County, England. These small sheep were known for their extreme hardiness and produced meat with unmatched tenderness and flavor than any other breed of sheep.
Some people think that these sheep have been bred from a larger breed to a miniature form to make novelty pets, the opposite is true. These miniature sheep are actually the original Southdown breed from the South Downs region of England. They were imported into the US in the early 19th century and were enormously popular on small family farms in the UK and America throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century.
In 1986, Robert Mock set about searching the United States for sheep that fit this original type, and by 1990 had found 350 suitable animals. These sheep became the foundation flock of the breed, and he set up a registry for them in 1991, naming them 'Olde English Babydoll Southdowns'.
Olde English Babydoll are quiet and gentle. They love weeds, honeysuckle and kudzu. Miniature Sheep help farmers clean ground in vineyards, high bush fruit fields, and small orchards. They are small enough not to damage the fruit and do not eat the bark off trees. They keep down weeds, insects, and leave behind all that fertilizer!
All our Olde English babydoll are registered, up to date on vaccinations and wormed.
